Patterson Named Defensive Player of the Week
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Sam Patterson of the Coastal Carolina women's soccer team has been named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
The Jacksonville, Fla. native is the second Chanticleer to receive the honor this season. The senior received her first Player of the Week honor after adding to the teams' two shutouts both defensively and offensively, to give the Chanticleers a 2-0 start in its opening weekend of Sun Belt play.
In the conference opener against Arkansas State, Patterson assisted on the Chant's first goal of the night to defeat Arkansas State 4-0. The senior received a cross from Ambria Shutts who sent the ball towards the top of the 18-yard box finding Patterson. Patterson directed the ball down to Famili who cut by her defender before hammering it home.
On Sunday, Patterson continued her stellar performance leading the team to its second shutout victory of the opening weekend. In the seventh minute, Shutts sent the ball into the box off a corner kick to a waiting Patterson. Patterson headed the ball past Appalachian State goalkeeper Sam Steyl's outstretched hands, placing the ball in the far right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The senior midfielder now has one goal and two assists for the 2016 campaign.
Coastal will return to action this week traveling to Georgia State Friday, Sept. 23. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
