Women's Soccer Wins Third Straight with a 2-1 Victory over North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.The CoastalCarolinaUniversity women’s soccer team (3-3-1) received goals from senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) and junior Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) as the Lady Chanticleers defeated North Florida (1-4-1) 2-1 Sept. 16 at the UNF Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla. Freshman Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) added five saves in goal, helping Coastal to its third straight win. The Lady Chanticleers now improve to .500 on the season.   At 16:38, Gunning put in her seventh goal of the season and 17th at Coastal on a blast from freshman Anna Tupy (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison). Haggard had three saves in the first 45 minutes in keeping the Ospreys off the scoreboard. Coastal was outshot 4-3 in the first half and UNF had a 2-1 corner-kick advantage.   Coastal would take a two-goal lead at 52:45 when Monroe scored her second goal of the season on a Gunning assist. Monroe’s shot went over goalkeeper Rachel Howard’s head for her 27th career goal. The score would stay the same until the 83rd minute when the Osprey’s Kady Dearing scored an unassisted goal to cut the Coastal lead to 2-1. The Ospreys would not get off another shot as Coastal’s two wins on the weekend gave the Lady Chants the tournament championship.   The two teams had seven shots apiece, while North Florida had a 6-1 corner-kick advantage. Haggard had two more saves in the second half, while Howard stopped four shots in the game for the Ospreys. Gunning had three shots, while Monroe and senior Amanda Gelsomino (Johnston, R.I./Johnston (University of New England) had two shots apiece for CCU.   Coastal is now off until Friday, Sept. 21, when the Lady Chants host Francis Marion. That game begins at 8 p.m.
