Women's Soccer Opens Big South Play with 3-1 win over Birmingham-Southern

More Information:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –Junior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) scored two goals and classmate Emma Humphries (Wellington, New Zealand/Samuel Marsden College (Cal State Fullerton)) scored her second goal in as many games as the Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (4-2-1, 1-0 Big South) defeated Birmingham-Southern (2-5, 0-1 Big South) 3-1 Sept. 15 in Birmingham, Ala. It was the Big South opener for both teams.

Gunning got the Lady Chanticleers on the board at the 6:29 mark of the first half. She scored on an assist from senior Simone Borucinski (Canberra, Australia/Daramalan College). The Lady Chanticleers made it 2-0 in the 11th minute as Humphries connected off a pass from senior Laura Weiler (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic).

Coastal outshot BSC 6-2 in the first half. The Panthers’ Brittany Green had two first-half saves, while BSC had a 2-1 corner-kick advantage.

The Panthers were awarded a penalty kick at 65:17, and Catherine Spiker cut the Lady Chant lead to one goal on the successful attempt. That would be as close as the Panthers would get, as Gunning’s goal off a direct kick at 81:49 gave CCU a two-goal cushion.

Coastal ended the game with an 11-7 shot advantage. Senior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) had two saves in the win, while BSC’s Green made four stops. The Panthers had a 3-1 corner-kick advantage.

Freshman Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) had three shots, two on goal, to lead CCU.

Coastal will end its seven-game road trip Sunday, Sept. 17, against Alabama A&M. The match will start at 1 p.m. CDT.
