JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –The CoastalCarolinaUniversity women’s soccer team (2-3-1) earned its second straight win in exciting fashion in a 3-2 win over Wagner (1-3) Sept. 14 at the University of North Florida Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla. Coastal trailed 1-0 at the half, but scored three second-half goals, including the game-winner with 10:31 left. Wagner scored the only goal of the first half 11 seconds in as Brooke Keany’s shot hit the back of the net of an assist from Dominique Bonura. Wagner had a 5-3 shot advantage, while Coastal Carolina had a 3-2 lead on corner kicks in the first half. Freshman Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) and Wagner’s Leslie Reed each stopped a shot in the first 45 minutes. Senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) got the Lady Chanticleers on the board at 55:36 on an unassisted goal. The game would stay 1-1 until the 71st minute as Brianna Vassallo scored with an assist from Josefine Allain. Coastal would tie it just over a minute later as Gunning scored off an assist from sophomore Samantha Teijelo (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel). The game winner came at 79:29 as Gunning completed the hat trick on a bicycle kick that went over Reed’s head. It was Gunning’s sixth goal of the year and her 16th at Coastal, putting her in fourth place in school history. Gunning has Coastal’s first hat trick since Bobbie Parsons did the trick against Birmingham-Southern Oct. 16, 2005. Coastal outshot the Seahawks 8-6 and had a 5-3 corner-kick advantage. Haggard picked up her first career win in goal. Coastal stays in Jacksonville for Sunday’s game against host North Florida. That game begins at 2:30 p.m.
