Freshman Jill Karelitz (Columbia, S.C./Dutch Fork) scored with a little more than 10 minutes left in the game, breaking a 1-1 tie as the Coastal Carolina University womens soccer team (3-3) defeated Old Dominion University (2-2-1) 2-1 Sept. 10, in the first day of the UNCG/adidas Classic in Greensboro, N.C.
Coastal opened the scoring early in the seventh minute as junior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) took senior Leah Barretts (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) pass from 12 yards out and connected on her second goal of the season, giving CCU a quick 1-0 lead. The Monarchs answered in the 28th minute when Laura Beeman took a turnover from sophomore Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) and drove in the unassisted goal, tying the game at one. Coastal was outshot in the first half 7-6, and trailed in corner kicks 4-1. Stoll made two stops in goal in the first 45 minutes.
Coastal fired off 10 shots in the second half, with ODUs Stephanie Miller stopping five shots, but Karelitz pounced on a loose ball from 10 yards out and scored on a deflection by an ODU defender at 79:16. It was her second goal of the season and gave Coastal its third win of the year.
Coastal outshot the Monarchs 16-10, as freshman Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) had five and Parsons and junior Rachel Devine (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) added three. Stoll had three saves for her third win in goal, while Miller stopped six Lady Chanticleer shots.
Coastal plays the host UNC Greensboro Sunday, Sept. 12, at 3:30 p.m. in the final day of the UNCG/adidas Classic.
