The Coastal Carolina University womens soccer team (2-1) will play three games this week, ending its four-game homestand to start the season, and playing in its second in-season tournament in as many weeks. Coastal hosts The Citadel Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. The Lady Chanticleers then head to Jacksonville, Fla., to compete in the JU/Best Western Invitational. Coastal faces Stetson Friday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m. and plays the host Jacksonville Sunday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m. Coastal is coming off a split in the Big South Challenge, falling to Army 3-1 and defeating Chattanooga 3-1.
SCOUTING THE CITADEL: The Citadel comes into Conway with a 2-2 record. In its most recent game against Longwood, the Bulldogs lost 3-0. The Citadel has wins over VMI (2-1) and South Carolina State (2-0). Megan McAuliffe leads the way for the Bulldogs with two goals, while Julie Austin has a goal and an assist in four games.
SERIES VS. THE CITADEL: Coastal leads the all-time series with The Citadel 2-0. Coastal won the last meeting between the two teams 1-0 Sept. 17, 2003. Kristina Fisher (Landenburg, Pa./Avon Grove) had the games lone goal. Coastal also won 9-0 against the Bulldogs Oct. 26, 2001.
SCOUTING STETSON: Stetson started the season with three straight wins, including a 2-1 win over Miami (Fla.). Aug. 31. The Hatters had its first loss last Saturday 2-0 to Kent State. Jennifer Hays leads the Stetson attack with two goals and Alicia Briggs had a goal and an assist. April Eilering has a 1.00 goals-against-average.
SERIES VS. STETSON:
This is the first meeting between Coastal and Stetson. All time, Coastal is 2-3 against teams from the Atlantic Sun, including a 1-0 win over Campbell last season.SCOUTING JACKSONVILLE: The Dolphins are coming off a 2-2 tie against Buffalo in the UCF Womens Soccer Invitational. Jenny Borschel leads Jacksonville with three goals in three games, while Keri Zwikker has four assists. The Dolphins have used three goalkeepers, with Michelle Kmiotek carrying a 1.50 goals against average.
SERIES VS. JACKSONVILLE: This is the first meeting between Coastal and Jacksonville. Coastal also has never played a team from the state of Florida, which it will do twice in the tournament.
A HOMECOMING OF SORTS FOR TWO NEWCOMERS: Freshmen Jenna Anderson (Cape Coral, Fla./Mariner) and Alyssa Hunt (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins) will be returning to their home state this weekend at the JU/Best Western Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla. Anderson and Hunt played on the same club team, the Lakeland Soccer Club, that went to the Florida State Cup in 2004. Both players hometowns are around three hours from Jacksonville.
MONORE HAS HAT TRICK AGAINST THE LADY MOCS: Freshman Blair Monroes (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) hat trick against Chattanooga was only the third time in school history that a Lady Chant has scored three or more goals in a game. Kristin Wisse scored four goals Sept. 13, 2000 in a 10-0 win over South Carolina State and Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) scored three in a 5-0 win over VMI Oct. 2, 2004.
COASTAL UNBEATEN VS. SOCON: With its 3-1 victory over Chattanooga Sept. 4, Coastal improved to 2-0 this season over teams from the Southern Conference. Coastal also beat Elon 1-0 Aug. 26 in the season opener. The Lady Chants have four more games against SoCon opponents, including this Tuesdays game against The Citadel.
PARSONS MOVES UP ASSIST LIST: With two assists in the 3-1 win over Chattanooga, senior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) moved to second place by herself on Coastals all-time assists list with 12. She needs four assists to pass Kristin Wisse (2000-02) and become CCUs all-time leader. She also extended her career points lead to 62.
REVERSING A TREND: In 2004, Coastal Carolina had six one-goal losses. The Lady Chanticleers took a big step in reversing that trend Friday against Elon. Coastals Jill Karelitz scored at 82:10 to give CCU a 1-0 win. The win also broke a two-game losing streak in season openers. Coastal, who is now 1-0 in one-goal games in 2005, had its lone one-goal win last season 1-0 against Campbell.
YOUTH MOVEMENT: Coastal showed off its 2005 recruiting class in the season opener against Elon Aug. 26. As many as five newcomers (Stepheney Gerhardt, Chelsea Terry, Blair Monroe, Jenna Anderson, Danielle DeSonia) were on the pitch at the same time against the Phoenix, while Gerhardt and Terry made their first starts at Coastal. Anderson collected her first start Sept. 4 against Chattanooga.
STOLL SHUTS OUT OPPOSITION: Junior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) earned her seventh career shutout Aug. 26 against Elon. Stoll stopped six shots on the night, including a free kick with 10 minutes remaining.
COASTAL PICKED SIXTH IN BIG SOUTH POLL: The Coastal Carolina University womens soccer team was picked to finish sixth in the 2005 Big South Conference preseason womens soccer poll, as voted by the Leagues Head Womens Soccer Coaches and Sports Information Directors, announced Wednesday by the Big South office.
Birmingham-Southern was picked to win the Big South, receiving 12 first-place votes and 155 out of a possible 162 points. The Panthers won the Big South Tournament last November. UNC Asheville earned three first-place votes and was picked second with 130 points. Radford earned one first-place vote and 116 votes in earning the third slot. High Point was chosen fourth with 101 points and Liberty earned the fifth spot with one first-place vote and 93 total votes. Coastal earned 80 votes for the sixth slot, while Winthrop (57 votes), Charleston Southern (56 votes; one first-place vote) and VMI (22 votes) rounded out the conference projections.
PARSONS PICKED FOURTH IN BSC PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Coastal senior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) was picked fourth in the Big South Preseason Player of the Year balloting, earning two first-place votes and six total points. UNC Ashevilles Emily Langill was named the Preseason Player of the Year after being the 2004 Player of the Year.
McCOLL COMPETES AT WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES: Sophomore Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) represented New Zealand in the 2005 World University Games in Izmir, Turkey. McColl started two matches in the Games, while the Kiwis finished in ninth place in the tournament.
WHOS BACK: Coastal returns 10 of its top 12 point scorers to the 2005 squad, including eight starters and its top goalkeeper. Senior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) had 10 goals last season, while sophomore Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) led the team with four assists. Sophomore Jill Karelitz (Columbia, S.C./Dutch Fork) and junior Laura Weiler (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) scored four and three goals, respectively. Junior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) returns with her 1.55 goals-against-average and .745 save percentage.
RETURN FROM INJURY: Senior Rachel Devine (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown), classmate Kristina Fisher (Landenburg, Pa./Avon Grove) and junior Simone Borucinski (Canberra, Australia/Daramalan College) all are returning from injuries that caused them to miss a considerable amount of games in 2004. Devine missed eight games due to an ankle injury, Fisher missed seven games in midseason to a foot injury and Borucinski missed the last six games to a knee injury.
