Women's Soccer Falls to Army 3-1 in the Big South Challenge

Army (3-1) scored two quick first-half goals to hand the Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (1-1) its first loss of the season, 3-1, in game two of the 2005 Big South Challenge Sept. 2, at the CCU Soccer Field.

The Black Knights scored just 1:39 into the game as a free kick by Delaney Brown went off a Coastal defender and into the net. Then at 12:54, Sarah Domme took a cross from the right side and connected on her first goal of the season off passes from Drew Biddick and Jen Pascucci.

Coastal was outshot by the Black Knights 10-3 in the first half, while junior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) had five first-half saves for the Lady Chanticleers. Army’s Rebecca Garcia had three saves in the first 45 minutes.

Coastal came out motivated in the second half, outshooting Army 7-6. The Lady Chants cut the deficit to one at 52:05 when junior Stepheney Gerhardt (Mohawk, N.Y./Herkimer C.C.) passed to senior Kristina Fisher (Landenburg, Pa./Avon Grove), who shot from 10 yards and beat Garcia high for her first goal of the season and her 11th career goal. Army would get its lead back to two goals at 74:29 when Ronee Farrell scored on a run from the right side, her third of the season.

For the game, the Black Knights outshot Coastal 16-10 and had a 3-2 corner-kick advantage. Stoll had seven saves, while Garcia stopped three shots on goal.

In the day‘s first game, Chattanooga defeated Charleston Southern 1-0 on Maya Peel’s goal in the 77th minute.

The Big South Challenge concludes Sunday, Sept. 4. Charleston Southern and Army play at 12:30 p.m. and Coastal hosts Chattanooga at 3 p.m.
