Women's Soccer Falls to Furman 2-0 in the Select Kickoff Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (0-3) fell to host Furman (1-0) 2-0 on the opening day of the Select Kickoff Classic Aug. 29 in Greenville, S.C.   Furman outshot Coastal Carolina 14-2 on the night and scored a goal in each half to earn the victory in the Paladins’ season opener. In the 36th minute, Rachel Shelnutt scored on an assist from Kate Myatt. Myatt sent a cross to Shelnutt, who slid it in from four yards out. The game stayed 1-0 until the 89th minute, when Alexa Jones scored with assists from Lucy Martin and Sara El-Shami.    Sophomore Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) had three saves for the Chanticleers, while Furman’s Briana de Mota had two saves in goal. Furman also had all four corner kicks.   Junior Sarah McPartlan (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge (Loyola Ill.)) and senior Chelsea Terry (Charleston, S.C./James Island) had shots-on-goal for the Chanticleers. Katya Gokhman led Furman with three shots.   Coastal Carolina will face Wofford Sunday, August 31 at 2:30 p.m., in the final day of the Select Kickoff Classic.
