The Coastal Carolina University womens soccer team (1-0) will host its first tournament in the programs history Sept. 2 and 4 with the Big South Challenge. The Lady Chanticleers welcome Charleston Southern, Army and Chattanooga to the CCU Soccer Field. Coastal faces Army Friday, Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Chattanooga Sunday, Sept. 4 at 3 p.m. CCU is coming off a 1-0 win over Elon Aug. 26, snapping a two-game losting streak in season openers.
SCOUTING ARMY: Army opened the season by finishing in second place in its own BAE Systems Womens Soccer Classic. The Black Knights defeated Manhattan 3-0 and fell to Buffalo 3-2. Ronee Farrell had two goals and an assist in two games, while Pia White added a goal and an assist. Goalkeeper Rebecca Garcia had eight saves in two games. Army was 8-8-4 last season and was ranked 12th in the Northeast Region in the Soccerbuzz.com Preseason Poll.
SERIES VS. ARMY: This is the first meeting between the two schools. Coastal also has never faced a team in the Patriot League.
SCOUTING CHATTANOOGA: Chattanooga fell to Clemson 4-1 in its season opener and had its second game at Eastern Kentucky cancelled due to severe weather. Chattanooga will face UT-Martin Wednesday before heading to Conway. Freshman Nikki Brannen scored the Mocs lone goal just 91 seconds into the match. Chattanooga was 12-5-1 last season and 7-3-1 in the Southern Conference.
SERIES VS. CHATTANOOGA: Coastal leads the season series 1-0 over the Mocs. The Lady Chants won 2-0 Oct. 27, 2002, in Conway. Kristin Wisse had a goal and an assist in the win. Coastal will play its second team from the Southern Conference this weekend after opening with a 1-0 win over Elon last Friday.
REVERSING A TREND:
In 2004, Coastal Carolina had six one-goal losses. The Lady Chanticleers took a big step in reversing that trend Friday against Elon. Coastals Jill Karelitz scored at 82:10 to give CCU a 1-0 win. The win also broke a two-game losing streak in season openers. Coastal, who is now 1-0 in one-goal games in 2005, had its lone one-goal win last season 1-0 against Campbell.YOUTH MOVEMENT: Coastal showed off its 2005 recruiting class in the season opener against Elon Aug. 26. As many as five newcomers (Stepheney Gerhardt, Chelsea Terry, Blair Monroe, Jenna Anderson, Danielle DeSonia) were on the pitch at the same time against the Phoenix, while Gerhardt and Terry made their first starts at Coastal.
STOLL SHUTS OUT OPPOSITION: Junior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) earned her seventh career shutout Aug. 26 against Elon. Stoll stopped six shots on the night, including a free kick with 10 minutes remaining. Stoll lowered her career goals-against-average to 1.47.
COASTAL PICKED SIXTH IN BIG SOUTH POLL: The Coastal Carolina University womens soccer team was picked to finish sixth in the 2005 Big South Conference preseason womens soccer poll, as voted by the Leagues Head Womens Soccer Coaches and Sports Information Directors, announced Wednesday by the Big South office.
Birmingham-Southern was picked to win the Big South, receiving 12 first-place votes and 155 out of a possible 162 points. The Panthers won the Big South Tournament last November. UNC Asheville earned three first-place votes and was picked second with 130 points. Radford earned one first-place vote and 116 votes in earning the third slot. High Point was chosen fourth with 101 points and Liberty earned the fifth spot with one first-place vote and 93 total votes. Coastal earned 80 votes for the sixth slot, while Winthrop (57 votes), Charleston Southern (56 votes; one first-place vote) and VMI (22 votes) rounded out the conference projections.
PARSONS PICKED FOURTH IN BSC PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Coastal senior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) was picked fourth in the Big South Preseason Player of the Year balloting, earning two first-place votes and six total points. UNC Ashevilles Emily Langill was named the Preseason Player of the Year after being the 2004 Player of the Year.
McCOLL COMPETES AT WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES: Sophomore Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) represented New Zealand in the 2005 World University Games in Izmir, Turkey. McColl started two matches in the Games, while the Kiwis finished in ninth place in the tournament.
WHOS BACK: Coastal returns 10 of its top 12 point scorers to the 2005 squad, including eight starters and its top goalkeeper. Senior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) had 10 goals last season, while sophomore Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) led the team with four assists. Sophomore Jill Karelitz (Columbia, S.C./Dutch Fork) and junior Laura Weiler (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) scored four and three goals, respectively. Junior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) returns with her 1.55 goals-against-average and .745 save percentage.
RETURN FROM INJURY: Senior Rachel Devine (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown), classmate Kristina Fisher (Landenburg, Pa./Avon Grove) and junior Simone Borucinski (Canberra, Australia/Daramalan College) all are returning from injuries that caused them to miss a considerable amount of games in 2004. Devine missed eight games due to an ankle injury, Fisher missed seven games in midseason to a foot injury and Borucinski missed the last six games to a knee injury.
UP NEXT: Coastal ends its four-game homestand Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m., against The Citadel. The Lady Chants will then play two games at the JU/Best Western Invitational Sept. 9-11 in Jacksonville, Fla.
