CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer senior Emma Humphries (Wellington, New Zealand/Samuel Marsden College (Cal State Fullerton)) and redshirt junior Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) both were selected to represent New Zealand in the 2007 Women’s World Cup, the country’s football organization announced recently. Both players will leave for New Zealand Aug. 28 for training, while the team will depart for China Sept. 5.
New Zealand is in Group D of the Women’s World Cup. The Kiwis will start by playing Brazil Sept. 12. They then have matches against Denmark Sept. 15 and host China Sept. 19. The top two teams in each group advance to the quarterfinals.
McColl and Humphries both played for New Zealand in its two-game trip to the United States, which included a game against the United States National Team in Chicago. McColl and Humphries joins Ali Riley of Stanford as the three collegians on the New Zealand team.
McColl is a two-year starter for the Lady Chanticleers in the midfield. The 2007 All-Big South Tournament Team member scored three goals and added three assists last season and currently has 19 career points. Humphries’ first year at Coastal was last season, when she scored three goals and added an assist in 17 games played.
Coastal opens the 2007 season Monday, Sept. 3 at Wofford. Game time is at 6 p.m.
