Coastal Women's Soccer Falls to Wofford 2-1 in Season Opener

More Information:

The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (0-1) fell in its 2004 season opener to Wofford College (1-0) 2-1 August 27, at the CCU Soccer Field. Sophomore Simone Borucinski (Canberra, Australia/Daramalan College) scored the Lady Chants first goal of the season in the 33rd minute, but Wofford put in the game-winner less than three minutes later.

The start of the contest was delayed one hour due to heavy rains and lightning in the area, leaving the pitch waterlogged. Coastal was the aggresor the first part of the game, earning four corner kicks in the first 15 minutes, but it was the Terriers who struck first when Eve Van Harpen scored on a header at 22:53 with assist from Rachel Hyatt and Mallory Bramlett. Another Coastal chance, this one by sophomore Laura Weiler (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) was saved by Wofford’s Austin Somers, but an ensuing corner kick set up Borucinski’s goal, which came off Somers and into the goal. The Terriers Bernie Sikes then had a 1-on-1 breakaway and scored at 35:00 to give Wofford the lead and its first win of the season.

In the second half, Coastal outshot Wofford 6-4, but neither team could score. Sophomore Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) had two saves in the last seven minutes to keep the deficit at one goal.

Coastal outshot the Terriers 16-7 and had a 10-2 corner-kick advantage. Senior Erin Blevins (Xenia, Ohio/Xenia), junior Kristina Fisher (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) and junior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) had four shots each. Somers had five saves in net for Wofford, while Stoll stopped two shots.

Coastal returns to the CCU Soccer Field Sunday, Aug. 29, to face North Carolina State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
