Famili and Atteberry Sweep Sun Belt POTW Awards
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Senior forward Daniella Famili (offensive) and freshman goalkeeper Rylee Atteberry (defensive) of the Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team have been named the Sun Belt Conference Players of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
The Chanticleer duo helped the program to a 2-0 start to the 2017 season with a 3-0 road victory over Wofford and a come from behind win over College of Charleston.
Famili, the Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year, accounted for three of five goals scored by the Chanticleers this past weekend. The senior’s first tally, the eventual game-winner, of the weekend over Wofford came in the 34th minute. Against the Cougars, Famili, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, scored both (67th minute and 74th minute) goals giving the Chants a come from behind 2-1 victory.
Atteberry earned her first career victory over Wofford. The Aurora, Colo. native, made four saves while facing nine shots. Early in the second half Atteberry thwarted the Terriers best opportunity with a diving save and following that up with a punch save to keep the score at 1-0. Against College of Charleston, Atteberry gave up a goal in the 30th minute to fall behind 1-0, but was able to weather the storm after Coastal took the lead to preserve the one goal victory.
The Chanticleers travel to Raleigh, N.C., Thursday (Aug. 24) to take on the Wolfpack of N.C. State from the ACC at 7:00 p.m.
