The Coastal Carolina University womens soccer team opened preseason practice this week, gearing up for its season opener August 25 against West Georgia at the CCU Soccer Field.
The Lady Chanticleers are going through three-a-day workouts this week, eventually going to one practice when school starts August 16. Coastal will have one exhibition game Saturday, August 19 at Jacksonville before facing West Georgia six days later.
The Lady Chants spent the first couple of mornings on the track, running various distances, including the mile and two mile. Coastal head coach Rohan Naraine has been impressed with the teams fitness through the first week. The Lady Chants also have been scrimmaging during the afternoon and night practices in preparation for their upcoming games.
Coastal returns seven starters and 12 letterwinners in 2006 to a team that went 13-6 and finished tied for second in the Big South standings last season.
One player who is not in training camp this week is junior Emma Humphries (Wellington, New Zealand/Samuel Marsden Collegiate (Cal State Fullerton)), but with good reason. Humphries is the captain of the New Zealand Under-20 Womens Team, who will play in the FIFA Under-20 Womens World Cup in Russia. New Zealand opens play with Australia on August 17.
