CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team was picked to finish third in the Big South Conference annual preseason poll, as voted on by the league’s head women’s soccer coaches.
The Chanticleers are led by first year head coach Tammy DeCesare and return 12 letterwinners and five starters from last season. Liberty, the defending 2009 regular-season champion, and Charleston Southern were picked ahead of the Chanticleers with the Flames taking the top spot. Coastal will host Liberty this season on Oct. 4. Rounding out the preseason picks include the 2009 Big South Tournament Champion High Point in fourth, Radford fifth, Gardner-Webb sixth, Winthrop seventh, VMI eighth, UNC Asheville ninth and Presbyterian 10th.
The Chanticleers finished the 2009 season with a 7-11-3 record and lost in the Big South Tournament Quarterfinals in penalty kicks against VMI. Coastal had two All-Big South First Team selections in Anna Tupy and Dana Gentile and Morgan Thomas was named to the All-Freshman Team.
Coastal opens the 2010 season on Saturday, August 14 in a scrimmage against Temple at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field. The game is scheduled to begin at noon.
