Coastal Carolina University women's soccer player Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) and Team New Zealand fell 1-0 to Norway in the Group G preliminaries at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics in Qinhuangdao, China. Norway scored on Melissa Wiik's goal in the eighth minute. McColl did not see action in the game against the Norweigans.
New Zealand now has one point after two of the three preliminary matches. The top two teams in the three groups plus the next two highest point totals advance to the quarterfinals. After Saturday, New Zealand is tied for third with Japan with one point. The third place teams in Group E and F (Sweden and North Korea) both have three points, so the Kiwis will need a win against the United States on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals. That match begins at 7:45 a.m., EDT in Shenyang.
