Coastal Carolina's women's soccer team has been selected fourth in the Big South Conference annual preseason poll, as voted by the leagues' head coaches.
High Point, the two-time defending Big South Tournament Champions tallied five first-place votes and 108 total points
to edge Radford, which received two first-place votes and 102 total points. Also corralling two first-place votes was Charleston Southern, which was picked to finish third with 90 points. Coastal Carolina garnered fourth place with 80 points and one first-place vote, followed by Liberty with 75 points. Winthrop earned the final first-place vote and tied with conference newcomer Campbell for the No. 6 spot with 72 points each. Gardner-Webb finished eighth with 59 points, followed by VMI (ninth, 25 points) and UNC Asheville (10th, 23 points). Presbyterian College rounded out the poll in 11th place with 20 points.
In addition, the coaches voted High Point forward Kelli Joline as the League's Preseason Attacking Player of the Year, while Radford goalkeeper Che' Brown was picked as the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
The Chanticleers finished the 2010 season tied for the regular season championship with a 6-2-1 conference record (10-8-2 overall) before falling to Liberty 3-2 in the first round of the Big South Tournament. The Chants regular season crown was the third in program history.
Head coach Paul Hogan, in his first year at the helm of the Chants, returns 15 players from last season's regular season championship team, including Big South All-Tournament selection Hannah Brown. Brown, a sophomore, scored both of Coastal's goals against Liberty to give her four goals and nine points in her freshman campaign. Hogan also welcomes in 15 new faces to the program as 13 freshmen and two transfers will don the Coastal teal for the first time this season.
The Chants will host South Carolina State in a exhibition bout on Friday, Aug. 12 before opening the regular season against Jacksonville at the North Florida Tournament in Jacksonville on Aug. 19.
