CONWAY, S.C. Coastal Carolina University womens soccer players Emma Humphries (Wellington, New Zealand/Samuel Marsden College (Cal State Fullerton)) and Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) will play on the New Zealand National Team as they face the United States Womens National Team Sunday, August 12 at 1 p.m. EDT. The game will be televised on ESPN2 from Soldier Field in Chicago, Ill.
Both teams are gearing up for the upcoming Womens World Cup September 10-30 in China. Humphries and McColl are battling to get on the New Zealand National Team, who opens World Cup play September 12 against Brazil in Wuhan, China. Both players have national team experience as Humphries played for New Zealand in the Under-20 Womens World Cup last August while McColl recently played for the Kiwis in the Oceania Womens World Cup qualifying tournament in Papau New Guinea in April.
"I think its an unbelievable experience for the girls to play against the United States team," Coastal head coach Rohan Naraine said. "Hopefully they will do well and make the final roster for China. Were proud for them and I think its great for our school. Its great for Coastal to have two players playing for their national team and to play against the best players in the world."
McColl is a two-year starter for the Lady Chanticleers in the midfield. The 2007 All-Big South Tournament Team member scored three goals and added three assists last season and currently has 19 career points. Humphries first year at Coastal was last season, when she scored three goals and added an assist in 17 games played.
Coastal opens the 2007 season Monday, Sept. 3 at Wofford. Game time is at 6 p.m.
