Softball's Lockett, Pulchinski Earn Verizon Academic All-America Honors


CONWAY, SC —
Coastal Carolina University seniors Sarah Lockett and Kristie Pulchinski are among those named to the Verizon Academic All-America Softball Teams announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).


Lockett, a native of Perth, Australia, was named to the first team as an infielder with a 3.77 grade point average in Business Finance.  Pulchinski, a Lombard, Illinois native, was named to the third team as the designated player with a 3.39 grade point average in Elementary Education.


Lockett led Coastal Carolina to the 2001 Big South Championship and the Lady Chanticleers third NCAA Regional in the past four years with a .346 batting average.  She also posted 11 doubles, 15 home runs and 43 RBI.  Lockett completed her career with a CCU record 36 homers and earned three All-Conference and two All-Region honors.


Pulchinski saved the best for last as she posted career-highs in almost every category as a senior.  She batted .310 in starting every game for the Lady Chants, adding eight doubles, four triples, two home runs and 18 RBI.  Pulchinski also earned Big South All-Conference and All-Tournament honors during her senior campaign.


The Verizon Academic All-Americaâ Teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-member CoSIDA.  To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00.  Sports information directors nominate eligible athletes from their schools who are named to district teams prior to being voted upon on the national level.  CoSIDA has been selecting Academic All-Americaâ teams since 1952.
