CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's and women's soccer teams hosted their second annual Alumni Weekend April 13-15.
The event drew more than 60 men's and women's alumni back to Coastal Carolina University, with some returning to campus for the first time since graduation. The highlight of the weekend featured the men's and women's alumni playing friendly matches with the current members of the Coastal Carolina soccer teams.
In a ceremony prior to the women's game, the teams came together for a moment of silence to honor and remember two alumni from the class of 2004: Jillian L. Marino and April Erin Stirton.
After the ceremony, the current team easily beat the alumni squad.
On the men's side, the spirited match was captured by the collegians by a 5-1 score. Kelley Porter (class of 2010) scored the alumni's lone goal of the day. Striker Ashton Bennett, a 2011 first-team All-American and M.A.C. Hermann Trophy semifinalist, scored twice to lead the collegians' high-octane attack. Junior Sebastian Bahos, sophomore Justin Portillo and freshman Ricky Garbanzo also found the back of the net for the current Chants.
Following the matches, the alumni and current players attended a banquet in Adkins Field House where they were addressed and thanked for their continued support of Coastal Carolina athletics by Coastal Carolina University President David DeCenzo, Director of Athletics Hunter Yurachek, men's soccer head coach Shaun Docking and women's soccer head coach Paul Hogan. Throughout the banquet a slideshow displayed photos of yesteryear as the alumni interacted with the current team members and reminisced of times at Coastal Carolina.
