#2 Coastal Carolina Advances to Sun Belt Championship; Shutout #3 Little Rock, 2-0
FOLEY, ALA. - In its first season as a member of the Sun Belt, the second-seeded Coastal Carolina women's soccer team will advance to the conference tournament championship after a defeating third-seeded Little Rock, 2-0, in the semifinals Friday at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.
With the win, Coastal (12-5-3) will play in its first conference hampionship match since the 2008 campaign when CCU was with the Big South. Coastal will take on the winner of the South Alabama-Appalachian State game in a 1 p.m. (CT) match on Sunday, Nov. 6.
Second-half goals from freshman Kylie Bostick and All-Sun Belt selection Amber Adams sparked the Chanticleer offensive and Becca Austin lead a Coastal defense that recorded its 12th shutout of the season, setting a school record.
Despite the score, Little Rock out-shot the Chanticleers 15-9 but Coastal took advantage of its chances in the box to hold a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Adams, Kayla Christian and Ambria Shutts each finished with two shots including one each on frame.
Throughout the first half, neither team was able to generate an offensive attack and came up empty each attempt in the final third.
Little Rock fouled Coastal 30-yards outside the box to set up Bostick up for a free kick. Bostick lifted the ball into the box to and it sailed over Little Rock goaltender Sara Small to give Coastal the 1-nil lead in the 50th minute.
Adams' tally came less than five minutes after Bostick's goal. In the 54th minute, Christian drove the ball down the right flank to cross the ball behind the defensive line to find Adams. Adams collected the ball and drilled it into the back of the net to make the score 2-0.
Coastal held on to its lead despite the Little Rock offensive testing CCU's back line. The Trojans best opportunity came in the 60th minute when a header from Hali Long was directed towards the frame of the goal but Austin snatched it off the line to keep the Trojans scoreless.
Austin (10-4-3) finished the game with four saves and notched her seventh solo shutout of the season. The seven shutouts moved Austin tied for second-best in program history.
The Chanticleers advance to the Sun Belt Conference tournament championship and await their opponent for Sunday's match on Nov. 6th at 1 p.m. (CT). For more information regarding the championship check back to GoCCUSports.com.
