CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 season-ending loss at the hands of visiting Gardner-Webb, Saturday Oct. 29, at the CCU Soccer Field.
Despite Coastal out shooting the Runnin' Bulldogs 4-1 in the first period, Gardner-Webb (6-7-5, 4-4-2 Big South) scored the lone goal of the game in the 43rd minute. After a Coastal foul, Stephanie Benshoof connected on the ensuing free kick from 30-yards out to provide the Bulldogs with the 1-0 advantage. The eventual game-winner was the Benshoof's first goal of the season.
The Chanticleer backline allowed only one Gardner-Webb shot on goal throughout the game; while the Coastal attack attempted nine shots, four of which fell on frame.
Hannah Browntook three shots, including two on back-to-back possessions in the 78th and 79th minute, with the first blast deflecting off the crossbar.
Christina Sternnearly tied the game in the 87th minute as she dribbled past the Gardner-Webb backline before ripping a shot that was saved by Gardner-Webb's goalkeeper Erika Lennis. The save was the fourth on the afternoon for Lennis to preserve the Runnin' Bulldogs' 1-nil victory.
Each team was charged with 11 fouls and both squads received a yellow card.
Saturday marked the final game for three Coastal Carolina seniors Tori Strengari, Julia Baldwin and Jessie Benchley. Prior to the contest, the trio of seniors were honored for the accomplishments and contributions to the Coastal Carolina women's soccer program.
The Chanticleers finish the season with a 2-15-2 overall record and a 2-7-1 mark in Big South play.
