Coastal Falls to Liberty 1-0 on Early Goal
Lynchburg, Va. - The top two teams in the Big South Conference battled it out on Saturday afternoon, but the Liberty Flames were able to come away with a 1-0 victory off an early goal.
The win for the Flames moved them into first place, knocking off Coastal, who previously held the number one spot. Coastal dropped to a 10-6-1 record overall and 6-2-1 in the conference. Liberty moves to a 9-7-1 overall record and 7-2-0 in conference play.
The Liberty Flames took the early lead scoring just over the ten minute mark. Liberty forward, Jennifer Knoebel sent a cross into the mix finding Crystal Elmers who one-touched it past Austin for the 1-0 lead.
Coastal answered the goal with a pair of shots to start the attack. Kayla Christian has a dangerous chance when a ball was sent over the back line. Christian was looking for a low shot but forced Liberty keeper, Holly Van Noord to make a diving save.
Amber Adams had a dangerous shot from the left flank driving it to the opposite post but just goes wide. Just a minute later, Adams has a one on one opportunity with the keeper but a Liberty defender was able to recover and clear the ball away.
The Chants continued to pressure the Flames with just five minutes remaining in the half. Brooke Horist ignited the final attempt of the half find Daniella Famili on the top of the six. Famili went for the one-touch volley but Van Noord was there to make the save.
Coastal came out strong to start the second half recording back to back shot attempts looking to net one but unable to connect in the final third. Christian sent in a dangerous cross finding Famili's head but she knocks it over the crossbar. Following the attempt, Christian was back on the ball on the right flank finding Adams at the back post volleying it to the opposite post forcing Van Noord to make a diving save.
Coastal earned a corner with Darbie Kelley at the ball who sent a quick pass to Famili at the top of the box who takes a touch and blasts one towards Van Noord but she was able to make the save.
After 20 minutes of an injury timeout, Coastal recorded two more shot attempts before the end of regulation.
At the end of the game, Liberty edged Coastal 20 to 16 in shots. Liberty keeper Holly Van Noord recorded nine saves to Becca Austin's seven.
The Chanticleers return to home this Tuesday for their final match of the season versus Charleston Southern. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
