Chanticleers Drop Overtime Thriller to South Alabama
CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers women's soccer team went toe to toe with the defending Sun Belt Conference champion South Alabama before falling 2-1 in the first overtime Sunday afternoon at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
The Chants controlled the pace the first half, outshooting the Jaguars 3-2, and were able to keep the pressure on South Alabama goalkeeper Justice Stanford, who was forced to make two tough saves to keep the match scoreless at intermission.
In the 71st minute of the second half, the Jaguars' Rio Hardy pushed a shot past the CCU goalkeeper for her ninth goal of the season. Danielle Henley was credited with the assist for the 1-0 lead.
Daniella Famili used some nice footwork to get the ball in front of the goal to draw a Jaguar foul. She then converted her second penalty kick of the season as the senior was able to punch the shot towards the left post and past a diving Stanford to knot the match up at 1-1.
In the overtime period - in the 98th minute - Chelsea Followwell sent a pass deep into CCU territory and Henley out-raced CCU keeper Rylee Atteberry to the ball and slid it into the goal for the game-winning tally and final margin of 2-1.
Coastal will return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 17) at 6:00 p.m., as it hosts South Carolina State. The match will be Senior day as the program will honor Famili and Leftwich in their final home match.
