Chants Roll To Victory At Presbyterian
Oct. 9, 2013
CLINTON - Kacey Kelley tallied two goals and one assist to lead a strong performance by the Coastal Carolina women's soccer team in a commanding 4-0 victory over host Presbyterian Wednesday night.
The Chanticleers won convincingly for the third time in four games and improved to 6-6-1 overall and 3-2 in the Big South Conference. Presbyterian dropped to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in league play.
Brianna Panico added a goal and an assist, while Darbie Kelley netted the other goal. Megan Spencer notched her fourth solo shutout of the season and the seventh of the year for Coastal. The five points for Kacey Kelley are the highest scoring game by a Chant since 2009.
Coastal dominated play from the outset and had plenty of good looks at the Presbyterian net. Rylie Johnson got a head on a corner kick by Ellie Taylor in the 19th minute. Taylor then had a chance herself shortly after as she received a throughball by Alyssa Clark at the left corner of the box and barely missed wide of the far post.
The Chants then converted in the 27th minute as Kelley set up Panico with a cross from the left side to the near post and Panico was able to head it in between Presbyterian keeper Jordan Broadway and the post. The goal was the team-leading sixth of the season for the freshman.
Coastal nearly made it 2-0 in the 34th minute on a well-played counterattack. The Chants worked the ball up to Maddie Phillips in the midfield and she sent a ball up the right side for Clark, who crossed it to the far side of the box. Jonsson one-timed it from just outside the six-yard box, but the shot hit off the right post.
Despite creating a few more opportunities before the half and finishing the first 45 minutes with an 8-2 shot advantage, the Chanticleers settled for a one-goal edge.
However, they widened the gap quickly at the start of the second half as Kacey Kelley struck twice in the first five minutes. First, Panico returned the favor from the opening goal as she worked the ball down the right side before sending a cross to the near post where Kelley finished the play with a solid header just 27 seconds into the half.
Kelley then upped the lead to 3-0 in the 49th minute as she got the ball at the top of the box and ripped a high shot over the leaping Broadway for her third goal of the season, all in the last two games. It was also her second career mulit-goal effort.
Darbie Kelley then capped the scoring with another goal from a cross in the 85th minute with an assist by Taylor Valentine. Valentine sent a ball from the right side and Kelley one-timed her shot off the left post and in for her second of the year and the 16th for Coastal in its last four games.
The Chanticleers finished with 20-12 advantage in shots, although many of Presbyterian's came after CCU had built their three-goal cushion. Coastal had a 9-6 edge in shots on goal and dominated the corner kick battle 8-1. Spencer totaled five saves and was only really tested once as she dove to her left for a stop with 24 minutes left in the second half.
The Chants return home on Friday, Oct. 11 for a key conference matchup against Winthrop. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., following CCU's nationally-ranked men's team's game vs. VMI. Free Papa John's pizza will be available while it lasts and students receive 200 GoTeal Reward points when they check in at Foursquare.
