CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team was unable to overcome an early Radford lead as the Chanticleers fell to the Highlanders by a 2-0 tally on Thursday, Oct. 6.

Radford lit up the scoreboard first at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field in the tenth minute of play as Coastal inadvertently recorded an own goal.

The teams would play a defensive minded game over the next 30 minutes as neither side was able to break through with scoring chances. Coastal found seams through the Radford backline late in the half to force a series of corner kicks in the 43rd minute. However, The Chanticleers were unable to get a shot off due to the aggressive play of the Highlanders.

The Chanticleer attack continued its momentum after the intermission as Hannah Brown fired a rocket of a shot on frame from 20-yards out three minutes into the second half. Unfortunately, the Radford keeper was able to backpedal and find her line in time to snag the shot attempt out of the air.

The Highlanders found nylon for the second time off the header by Myrina Booker in the 67th minute after a foul on the Chants just outside the right side of the '18. Sydney Golden lofted the free kick attempt into the box to Booker who had elevated to deflect the ball past the Chants' Saundra Baron.

Coastal would counter with a flurry of shots eight minutes later. Cami Skladany fired two sequential shots on net after a corner kick by Alyssa Clark. Both attempts were deflected harmlessly away by the Radford defense. Moments later Brown fired her second shot on frame from a distance, but the Radford keeper was able to secure the ball to preserve the 2-nil lead.

The Chanticleers were unable to convert on two corner kicks late in the game as the Highlanders held on for the win.

At the conclusion of the match, Coastal held a 10-7 edge in shots and a 6-4 advantage in corners as Radford bested their hosts in shots on goal, 6-5.

Coastal's Baron finished the night with three saves before being replaced late by sweeper Sarah Russo, who recorded a save of her own.

Coastal returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 as hosts to VMI. Match time is set for 10 a.m.
