LYNCHBURG, Va. - Coastal Carolina women’s soccer was unable to overcome a Liberty goal in the 74th minute of play as the Flames edged the Chanticleers by a 1-nil margin on Thursday, Sept. 29.
With the game tied at zero late in the second half Liberty’s Maddie Boone fed a well placed ball into the 6-yard box to the foot of Silvia Betancourt. Betancourt took one touch before chipping a shot past the Chanticleers’ Saundra Baron and into the upper right corner of the net.
Coastal would be unable to provide an equalizer in the remaining 16 minutes of play as the Liberty defense clamped down on the Chanticleer attack.
The Chants were afforded a prime scoring opportunity in the early going of the second stanza. Midfielder Rylie Johnson slid a low-lying pass from the right side of the ’18 to Morgan Thomas near the left side of the penalty spot. Thomas took two touches to the left before turning to shoot; however, the Liberty keeper came out of the net and smothered Thomas’ shot attempt.
Coastal started the game on the offensive as the black and teal clad Chanticleers were able to find holes in the Liberty backline leading to three shot attempts in the opening 15 minutes of play. The Chants would go on to outshoot the Flames by a 4-3 margin in the first half.
Freshman goalkeeper Saundra Baron finished her Big South debut with four saves on eight Liberty shot attempts.
Liberty finished the match with an 8-6 margin in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Coastal will stay on the road and travel to High Point to take on the Panthers on Saturday, Oct. 1. The match is set for a 5 p.m. kick off at the Panther’s Vert Stadium.
