Women's Soccer Surrender 2-0 Decision to Georgia State
Decatur, Ga. - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team suffered its first conference loss with a 2-0 setback to Georgia State Friday evening.
With the loss, Coastal dropped to 5-4-1, 2-1 in the Sun Belt, while Georgia State improves to 4-3-3 and recorded its' first Sun Belt win of the season (1-1-1).
Play remained even throughout the first half with neither team able to record a shot until the 20th minute. Senior Amber Adams sailed a shot high of the goal frame to record her first and only shot of the match.
Just a minute before the half-time buzzer, Georgia State's Alexis Thomas scored off a deflection to go into the break with a 1-0 lead.
With an edge over Coastal heading into the second half, the Panthers showed the same intensity at the start of the second half whistle. In the 62nd minute, Thomas scored her second goal of the night for Georgia State.
Coastal picked up the pace as time winded down and tested the Panther defense with multiple offensive attempts in the final third of the pitch.
Coastal's best threat was thwarted when Panthers' goaltender Brie Hayes was drawn off her line to punch away a cross to keep Georgia State's lead at 2-nil.
With under four minutes remaining, Hayes and her defensive line were tested again as a corner kick for Coastal was knocked away.
At the conclusion of the match, Coastal held a 7-6 edge in shots and a 4-1 advantage in corners as Georgia State bested Coastal in shots on goal, 4-2.
Sophomore Morgan Divine suffered her first defeat in the net for the Chanticleers. Divine finished the night with two saves and two goals against.
The Chanticleers continue its road swing traveling to Georgia Southern next Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. before heading to Texas State Sunday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. (CT).
