Coastal Use Double Overtime to Defeat Troy
CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team had a flair for the dramatic on Friday as freshman Mackenzie Gibbs evened the score with a minute left in regulation and senior Daniella Famili scored in the sixth minute of the second overtime period to give the Chanticleers a 2-1 win over Troy at CCU Soccer Stadium.
The Chanticleers improved to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Sun Belt while the Trojans fall to 3-7-2 overall and 1-2 in conference action.
Despite needing overtime, Coastal controlled the tempo most of the match. CCU out-shot their opponents 13-to-3, including five on goal. The Trojans, however, did hold an 8-to-4 advantage in corner kicks..
Troy got on the board first. Julia Winter headed a cross from Lauren Aldrich from the left side of the box for the 1 - nil lead.
After intermission, the Chants came out with more energy and applied pressure but were unable to get the ball into the net to even the score until late. At the 89th minute, Gibbs put the last of three Chanticleer shots into the back of the net to knot the score at 1-1.
The first overtime saw only one shot and that was from Troy, which just went wide.
In the second overtime, Coastal had a flurry of activity that led to the game-winning goal. Gibbs put her second shot on goal and allowed the Trojans goalie to pick up her third save of the night. Then fellow freshman Hannah Eiden put a shot on goal hitting the crossbar and bounding to Famili, who put it past the Troy goalie for the game-winning goal.
The goal was the seventh for Famili this season and her fourth game-winner.
Coastal Carolina will next be in action on Sunday, Sept. 24, in Monroe, La., as they take on ULM at 1:00 p.m. (CT).
