CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to UNC Wilmington in its final nonconference game Thursday night at the CCU Soccer Field.

The Chanticleers fell to 3-4-0 on the season, while UNC Wilmington improved to 5-2-1.

The Seahawks tallied the lone goal in the 72nd minute as Maddie McCormick put a low shot from the left side of the 18-yard box past diving Coastal goalkeeper Megan Spencer into the near corner.

UNC Wilmington continued to put pressure on the Chants' defense after the goal, but Spencer came up with a couple of key defensive plays to keep it a one-goal deficit. She leapt high in the air to intercept a Seahawk corner kick and then made a save on a one-on-one opportunity by UNCW leading scorer Stephanie Rose with just over five minutes remaining.

The Chanticleers, who generated their best scoring chances of the game in the first half, tried to push their way into the UNCW defensive half in the final minutes. A header by freshman midfielder Fia Jonsson sailed over the goal and a shot by junior forward Cisca Okoko went wide. Freshman midfielder Darbie Kelley got off a corner kick in the final seconds but it did not lead to a shot attempt.

Coastal outshot UNCW 5-4 in the opening half and had the better opportunities early, including a left-footed attempt by sophomore forward Kacey Kelley from the top of the box that was saved by the Seahawks keeper. Shortly after, a shot by Ashley Day went high.

The teams played even for the last 20 minutes of the opening half and early in the second stanza, before the Seahawks started to gain more control. UNCW finished the game with a slim 14-12 edge in shots and put five on goal, while Coastal totaled three.

Spencer finished with four saves, while Jonsson recorded a team-high four shots.

The Chanticleers open up Big South Conference play Thursday, Sept 20 at Winthrop and then travel to Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Sept. 22.
