ELON, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (1-5) fell to Elon (2-1-1) 1-0 Sept. 9 in Elon, N.C. Elon scored its game-winning goal with just under six minutes left in the game, as the Chanticleers fell in their fifth-straight contest.
Coastal Carolina came out and had two quick shots, including one on goal from freshman Morgan Thomas (Simpsonville, S.C./Southside Christian), but Elon outshot the Chanticleers 8-2 in the first half. Scarlett Fakhar and Molly Calpin had two shots apiece for the Phoenix. Elon had three shots on goal, all saved by junior Karen Pavlick (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley). Elon also had a 3-1 corner-kick advantage.
Coastal Carolina had two chances to score in a two-minute span with 15 minutes remaining. Sophomore Tori Strengari (Newark, Del./St. Mark’s) had a shot with the goalie out, but the ball was blocked for a team save at 74:11. Then on a corner kick, senior Maegen Hellberg (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) headed the ball just wide to the left of the goal at 76:15. Elon capitalized on its opportunity at 84:11. Calpin’s shot from 10 yards out went in the top of the goal for her first tally of the season. It was assisted by Ceci Jensen.
Elon outshot the Chanticleers 12-9, with both team putting four shots on frame. Both teams also had three corner kicks. Strengari and senior Samantha Teijelo (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) had two shots apiece to lead Coastal Carolina.
Elon’s Sydney Little had three saves in the win. Pavlick also had three saves for the Chanticleers.
Coastal Carolina opens the Fairfield Inn and Suites Marriott Tribe Invitational Friday, Sept. 11 at the College of William and Mary. Game time is at 7 p.m., in Williamsburg, Va.
