Famili Leads Chants to 2-1 Win over Eagles
CONWAY - Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year Daniella Famili scored twice to lead Coastal Carolina to a 2-1 victory over former conference foe Winthrop Friday evening at the CCU Soccer Stadium. With the victory, the Chanticleers improve to 4-1 while the Eagles drop to 1-2-1.
Famili picked up her fifth and sixth goals of the year. First, she found the back of the net in the 20th minute on an unassisted goal. Famili followed up in the 24th minute. On that second goal, Elisabeth Rockhill (three assists on the season) broke down the left side of the field and pushed a pass to the center of the pitch to allow Famili to beat the Eagle goalkeeper for the 2-0 lead.
Winthrop (1-2-1) managed to pull within one and trail 2-1 at the break when Allie Thomas rolled a shot into the net off the corner feed from Katie Colwick in the 37th minute.
The Chanticleer opened the second half with good pressure on the Eagle defense, out-shooting the visitors three to nil in the final 45 minutes, but neither team scored to account for the 2-1 final.
For the night, Coastal outshot the Eagles 10-to-6 and held a 5-to-3 advantage in corner kicks. In addition to Famili's two goals, she had two shots, while Kayla Christian, Mackenzie Gibbs, Brenna Leftwich, Baylee Price, Hannah Eiden, and Rockhill added one shot each.
Coastal Carolina returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 3), at the CCU Soccer Stadium to take on Davidson of the Atlantic-10 at 1:00 p.m.
