CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Elon in both teams' season opener Friday night at the CCU Soccer Field.
Elon netted a goal in each half en route to the victory and was led by sophomore forward Nicole Dennion, who tallied a goal and an assist.
Coastal had to play without Big South Freshman of the Year Fia Jonsson, who sat out due to illness, and senior Christina Stern. Sophomore Kacey Kelley, still recovering from an injury, played limited minutes.
The shorthanded Chanticleers were unable to generate many scoring chances, but the best opportunity came before halftime. Trailing 1-0 with six seconds left in the half, sophomore Camille Christie sent a free kick from near midfield toward the goal and sophomore Darbie Kelleyheaded toward the left corner. However, Elon goalkeeper Kate Murphy was able to make a diving stop on the low attempt.
The Phoenix got on the board in the 26th minute when Dennion sent a cross following a corner kick into the six-yard box and Alissa Panuosco put a header into the top near corner.
Dennion then added her goal seven minutes into the second half.
Elon finished the game with a 13-5 edge in shots. Megan Spencermade three saves for Coastal, which started four freshman and three sophomores.
The Chanticleers face another Southern Conference team on Sunday as they travel to Davidson for a 2 p.m. game - the first of five consecutive games on the road.
