CONWAY, S.C.- The women's soccer team played the Temple Owls in an exhibition match today at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field. The Owls outscored the Chanticleers one goal to none in the pre-season contest. Unlike a traditional game, this exhibition match featured three 30 minute periods instead of two 45 minute halves.
The Chanticleers came out strong in the first period and were able to establish a defensive presence early in the frame. The Chants were also able to put together several good runs that resulted in two shots on goal and a corner kick in the first period.
"We came out strong and aggressive in the first period and established a good defensive presence that we would like to have been able to keep throughout the game," said first year head coach Tammy DeCesare. "We had several opportunities in the first 30 minutes and throughout the game that we were just not able to capitalize on."
The second period became more of a defensive struggle as neither team was able to take the upper hand as the ball remained around the midfield stripe for the majority of the 30 minutes.
Temple was able to score the lone goal on the day at the 9:52 minute mark in the final 30 minute frame. Both teams were evenly matched throughout the game as both recorded three shots on goal and each had four corner kicks.
"We came into today with some goals to achieve and for the most part we were able to achieve them," said DeCesare. "We were just not consistent over the full 90 minutes and that is one thing that we will continue to work on throughout the season." "Temple was a good test for the team today and we learned a lot about where we stand to start the season and what we need to build on," said DeCesare.
The Chants will open the regular season on the road in Lexington, Ky. in one week as the take on the Kentucky Wildcats. Kickoff for the match is set for 7 p.m.
