Charlotte, N.C. - Rachel Waldron of the Coastal Carolina University women's lacrosse team was named the Big South Defensive Player of the Week, while teammate Jenna Stover earned The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week honors for her defensive efforts in Coastal's 14-10 win over Campbell on Sunday, the league announced today. The defensive honor is the second of the season for Waldron, while the Freshman of the Week nod marks the first weekly award of Stover's career.
Waldron led the Chanticleers with a game-high seven draw controls against Campbell, marking the second time this season that the sophomore has tied the single-game record she set last year. Her efforts in the center circle helped Coastal keep possession and protect its second half lead. The Vienna, Va., native also tied for the game-high in ground balls with five, while forcing one turnover.
Waldron leads the Chants with 39 draw controls on the season, already eclipsing her mark of 32 in 2013 and passing Keri White's single-season record of 34. Her 3.9 draw controls per game ranks second in the Big South. Waldron also leads the team in ground balls with 18, and her 11 caused turnovers fall just short of Nyra Constant's 12.
Stover recorded her second career win on Sunday and now holds a 2-1 record in net. The Lansdale, Pa., native made four of her six total saves in the second half, helping to protect Coastal's lead as Campbell attempted a comeback. Perhaps her most impressive save of the day came in the final minutes of play when she stoned Campbell's Erin O'Hara on a breakaway shot. Stover additionally grabbed four ground balls around her net, bringing her season total to 13.
Stover has spent 204 minutes in net this season, stopping 22 of the 77 shots she's faced for a .344 save percentage.
Stover, Waldron and the Chanticleers continue their three-game conference home stand on Friday when they host the Longwood Lancers for a 6 p.m. tilt at Brooks Stadium.
