Charlotte, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team was selected to finish sixth in the Big South Conference's preseason poll by the league's head coaches, it was announced today. It is the second consecutive year that the Chanticleers have been picked sixth in the preseason poll.

The Chanticleers received 30 points from one fourth-place vote, four fifth-place votes and three sixth-place votes.

High Point was a near-unanimous selection to repeat as Big South champions, receiving seven of the eight first-place votes and finishing with 63 of a possible 64 total points. Associate women's lacrosse member Davidson, last year's regular-season champion, was second in the preseason poll with 57 points and received the remaining first-place vote. Longwood was picked third with 40 points, while Winthrop finished fourth in the voting with 39 points and Liberty landed in the fifth spot with 35 points. Campbell garnered 16 points for seventh place, and Presbyterian College finished eighth with eight points.

The Chanticleer women's lacrosse program enters its second year of competition coming off a 5-11 season that included two conference wins.

The Chants return the bulk of last season's roster, having lost only four starters. Among the 15 returnees are leading scorers Keri White, Charlotte O'Leary and Rachel Ferrara, who finished with 38, 30 and 29 points, respectively, last season.

Also returning are midfielder Lily Yednock, who led the team in ground balls and caused turnovers in 2013; goalie Trista Kuehn, who started all 16 games in net for the Chants; and defender Maddy Ciardi who was voted second team all-conference for her defensive efforts last season.

The 2014 Chanticleers will additionally feature 12 newcomers including 10 freshmen, sophomore transfer Mikayla Sweeney (Virginia Tech) and junior attack Jen Cosgrove

Coastal's 2014 lacrosse season begins on Feb. 11, when the Chants travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to take on Oregon in a neutral-site game. Coastal will also participate in the year's first Big South Conference game when the Chants host Campbell on March 29, at Brooks Stadium.
