Gallagher, Eagles Down Chants in Big South Semifinals
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Shannon Gallagher scored a game-high four goals and Logan McCarthy notched two goals to lift No. 1 seed Winthrop past No. 4 seed Coastal Carolina, 8-4, Thursday afternoon in the semifinal round of the 2016 Big South Women's Lacrosse Championship at Winthrop University's Eagle Field.
Hayley Krause and Danielle Ellis also added a goal apiece for the Eagles.
Winthrop (19-2) extended its win-streak to 11, improved to 6-0 all-time against Coastal, and advanced to its second-straight trip to the conference title game.
The Eagles will meet the winner of No. 2 High Point/ No. 3 Campbell, in the Big South Championship on May 7 at 12 p.m.
Coastal looks ahead to 2017, after delivering arguably its strongest season of all-time. The Chants wrapped the season with an 11-7 overall record, including five wins over conference opponents and solid performances against nationally-ranked teams such as No. 9 Louisville.
Winthrop jumped out to a 3-1 halftime lead, on four goals from Gallagher.
Junior goalkeeper Jenna Stover and the Chants' defense -- Nyra Constant, Lauren Thomas and Maddy Ciardi -- kept the pressure on after action resumed, holding the Eagles to just six shots in the second half.
Alexander and Genovese scored back-to-back goals on free position shots to cut Coastal's deficit to three with 9:50 remaining, but McCarthy iced the game off a feed from Kristen Shriver with 3:58 left.
In net, Coastal junior Jenna Stover allowed eight goals on 23 shots, while Alaina Girani had 10 saves for Winthrop.
The Eagles had the advantage with 12 ground balls to 8, and Winthrop outshot Coastal, 23-17. Winthrop had the edge in draw controls, 8-6.
