The Chanticleers Defeat Mercer for Historic Season
Mercer, Ga. - The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team completed a historic season defeating the Mercer Bears 16-7, Sunday afternoon, in Mercer. The win gives the Chanticleers their first conference title in program history and the 12 wins is most in a season.
Coastal improved to 12-5 and 9-1 in ASUN Conference play, and Mercer dropped to 12-5 and 7-3 in conference. The Chanticleers earned a first round bye in the upcoming ASUN tournament May 4-7, by virtue of the win.
Harley Barrett improved her record to 11-5, tallied nine saves on the day and allowed seven goals. The Bears Haleigh Wurzel gave up 12 goals before being replace dropped to 12-5 on the season.
Mercer started the scoring for a 1-0 lead when Kelly Hagerty found the back of the net.
Lindsey Zeltwanger gave the lead back to the Bears for the final time in the game at 2-1.
The second half saw the Chanticleers outscore Mercer 11-5, to claim the first conference title in program history.
The Bears got goals from Erica Coyne (three), Meghan Sergreti, and Kate Christian for their final tally of seven.
White (three goals) found the back of the net twice (24:05, 11:10) and Crowther (five goals on the day) tallied three in the half (22:27, 7:29, and 4:50) to help wrestle control of the match.
Genovese got two in the second half, finishing off a hat trick on the day.
Coastal Carolina will next be in action in the ASUN Conference tournament in Jacksonville, Fla., Friday, May 5, at 1:00 p.m., and will take on the winner of four seed Mercer and five seed Old Dominion.
