Coastal Carolina Hands Jacksonville First Ever Regular Season ASUN Defeat
CONWAY - Coastal Carolina handed Jacksonville its first ever regular season ASUN Conference loss, 12-8 in Conway, Friday afternoon.
The Chanticleers improved their record to 9-5 on the season and 6-1 in ASUN play, and the Dolphins dropped to 10-5 and 7-1.
Jacksonville got on the board early winning the opening draw and scoring the first goal of the game with 18 seconds elapsing from the clock. The Dolphins scored to take a 2-0 lead at the 27:54 mark when Danielle Della Rocca found the back of the net.
Haley Alexander (three goals, one assist) started a six goal run with 24:18 left in the first half, cutting the lead in half at 2-1. Keri White (19:54, 5:16) and Courtney Genovese (15:38, 11:31) each got two goals and Madeline Bromley joined in at the 14:45 mark to go up 6-2 the score at the end of the first half.
Jacksonville needed only nine seconds to start the scoring in the second half, Courtney Valdez won the draw and raced down the field to fill the net. Valdez scored again to pull the Dolphins within two with the score 6-4.
Sophie Crowther scored at the 27:17 mark when Alexander led her for the open shot to push the lead back to three at 7-4.
Rachel Aus pulled Jacksonville back to within two for the final time with 24:46 left in regulation on the assist by Valdez.
Coastal put three more in the back of the net when White (19:08) and Alexander (16:46, 15:34) twice, pushing its lead to 10-5 the largest margin of the game.
Genovese put two more goals in to give CCU its final tally of 12 and Jacksonville could only put in three more for a total of eight on the day.
The Chanticleers will close out the home portion of their schedule on Sunday (April 23) at 12:00 p.m., in Conway at Brooks Stadium to honor nine Chants playing in their final home game.
