Chants Drop Final Home Game to Davidson

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women’s lacrosse team played its final home game of the inaugural season on Sunday afternoon, falling 18-8 to visiting Davidson.
With the win, Davidson improves to 9-5 overall, and keeps a perfect 6-0 record in the Big South. Coastal will enter its final game of the season next week with a 4-11 overall record, 1-5 in the Big South.
Davidson’s offense took 31 shots in the game, almost doubling Coastal’s 17. The Wildcats also took a 25-15 advantage in ground balls, while turning over the ball 12 times compared to Coastal’s 17. The two teams fared the same in the center circle, with each side claiming 14 draw controls.
Keri White once again led the Chanticleer offense, scoring two goals and recording two assists. Kimmy DeLonge also netted two goals for the Chants. Sara Nolan, Rachel Ferrara, Rachel Waldron and McKynsey Douglas each had one.
Waldron had a game-high seven draw controls for the Chants, while Trista Kuehn led the team with three ground balls, and Morgan Gott forced two turnovers. Kuehn, who was credited with the loss, was replaced by senior Stephanie Torosian, who saw 30 minutes of play and made two saves on her senior day.
The Wildcats had nine players find the back of the net, including three goals apiece for Ann Fucigna and Alanna Parker. Holly Thomas led Davidson with four ground balls and four draw controls, while defender Paige Logan forced three turnovers. Jessica Melby was credited with the win in goal, making one save on six shots before surrendering her net to Katy Boyle in the 40th minute.
Coastal took control of the game early, keeping possession in Davidson’s end and scoring the first two goals. Waldron tweaked the twine just 49 seconds into the game, putting an unassisted shot behind Melby. Two and a half minutes later, Nolan received a pass from White and put the biscuit in the basket to give the Chants an early 2-0 lead.
Parker struck back just 10 seconds later, taking the draw control and going straight to the goal to cut Coastal’s lead to 2-1.
DeLonge put Coastal ahead by two once more at 25:59, scoring on an unassisted wrap-around.
The Wildcats’ offense then kicked into gear, scoring nine straight goals to end the first half and give Davidson a 10-3 cushion.
Mary Leonard of Davidson opened the scoring in the second half, taking a pass from Fucigna and scoring at 28:42 to give the Wildcats an 11-3 lead.
White would break up Davidson’s scoring streak at 25:45 of the second, scoring an unassisted goal to put the score at 11-4.
Davidson outscored Coastal 7-4 in the remaining 25 minutes of the game. White scored her second goal of the game at 20:35, Douglas netted her seventh of the season at 15:05, Ferrara scored her 22nd goal at 9:02, and DeLonge closed out the game’s scoring with a goal at :52, assisted by White.
Coastal will return to action at Campbell on Saturday, April 20 to close out their regular season schedule. The opening draw between the Chanticleers and Fighting Camels is set for 1 p.m.
