Coastal Notches Big Win, Defeats High Point 15-12
CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team notched arguably its biggest win in program history as they defeated the two-time defending Big South Tournament Champion High Point Panthers by a final score of 15-12 on Friday evening at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
It took longer than expected for the offenses to get going, but a back-and-forth first half ultimately ended with Coastal holding an 8-6 advantage. Coastal scored three consecutive goals in less than two minutes to take a 5-3 lead with 9:40 to play. High Point then responded right back with three goals of its own in less than three minutes to regain the lead at 6-5. However, the Chanticleers ended the half on their second run of three consecutive goals to take the advantage for good.
The Panthers came out in the second half and were able to cut Coastal's lead to 9-8 with 20:06 remaining, but that's as close as they would get. Coastal only extended its lead from there as they outscored High Point 6-4 down the stretch to secure the victory.
For Coastal Carolina, junior attack Keri White continued to light up the score board as she totaled a career-high five goals to go along with one assist in the victory. It marked White's seventh multiple-goal performance in the team's last eight games. Additionally, sophomore midfielder Alicia Geiter and senior attack Jen Cosgrove contributed hat tricks for the Chanticleers' offense.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jenna Stover was instrumental down the stretch as she saved nine shots, including seven in the second half, to help Coastal preserve its lead. Also, junior defender Maddy Ciardi recorded a career-high six ground balls and five caused turnovers in the impressive defensive effort.
With the win, the Chanticleers improve to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while High Point falls to 4-8 overall and 2-1 in the Big South. The victory also marks Coastal's first in the two teams' three-game series and gives the Panthers their first conference loss in two years.
Coastal continues its conference play with a trip to Rock Hill, S.C. to take on Winthrop (11-2, 3-0) on Sunday, April 12 at 1 p.m. The Chants are 0-3 all-time against the Golden Eagles, including a loss in last year's Big South Championship quarterfinals.
