Campbell Edges Coastal, 8-7
CONWAY - Erica Hitch and Kayla Reilly scored three goals apiece and Loren Day notched two goals and added three assists in Campbell's 8-7 victory over Coastal Carolina at Brooks Stadium Wednesday evening.
The win, Campbell's first ever against Coastal, improved the Fighting Camels to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in Big South Conference action.
With the loss, the Chants (6-5) saw their two-game win streak come to an end and they fell to 2-2 in conference play.
Campbell is now 1-4 all-time against Coastal, and all five of the contests have been decided by four goals or less.
The Fighting Camels took 12 shots in the first half and headed into the midway mark with a 5-4 lead, but Charlotte O'Leary scored twice in the second half to keep Coastal in the mix. A goal from Sophie Crowther with 16:54 left in regulation put the Chants ahead 7-6.
However, Hitch found the back of the net twice in the final 10 minutes of the second half to secure the victory for Campbell. O'Leary led Coastal offensively with a hat trick, and Sophie Crowther chipped in with two goals.
In net, Jenna Stover had a game-high 10 saves for Coastal. Campbell's Meredith Bechler finished with eight saves.
Campbell had the advantage with 24 ground balls to 21, and the Fighting Camels also outshot Coastal, 30-15. Coastal had the edge in draw controls, 10-7.
The Chants hit the road for a game April 9 at 6 p.m. against Gardner-Webb, before returning home April 16 at 2 p.m. against Longwood.
