White's Last Minute Goal Carries Coastal Past Detroit

The Chanticleers earned the first home win in the program's history.

CONWAY - Keri White found an opening in the defense and scored an unassisted goal with 52 seconds remaining on the clock to lift Coastal Carolina over Detroit Mercy 14-13 Friday afternoon at Brooks Stadium. The win, which advances Coastal to 3-6 on the season, marks the first home victory for the women’s lacrosse program.

Kimmy DeLonge and Keri White each netted three goals and provided one helper apiece to pace the Chants offensively. Rachel Ferrara and Sara Nolan both found the back of the net twice, while Paige Timberg, Charlotte O’Leary, Morgan Gott and Elizabeth Reed provided one tally each for Coastal.

Captain Kaitlyn Trodden led the Chants defensively, forcing four turnovers and grabbing five ground balls, while O’Leary, White and Rachel Waldron each won three draw controls.

Coastal goalie Trista Kuehn earned the win, making six saves and picking up two ground balls in front her net.

Erin Campbell led Detroit offensively, netting four tallies on six shots. Sophomore Tessa Keuler followed with three, while the Titans’ leading scorer, Zaynib Hamze, scored two.

The Chants started the game with two goals in the first two minutes. Paige Timberg opened the scoring at 29:13 with an unassisted goal. Charlotte O’Leary recorded the second shortly afterwards at 28:27 by way of Rachel Ferrara.

Erin Campbell put the Titans’ first marker on the board less than two minutes later, cutting the Chants’ lead to one. Another Coastal goal at 25:18, courtesy of Keri White, was followed by two straight Detroit goals by Tessa Keurler to even the score at 3-3.

After a Ferrara goal for Coastal and a Campbell goal for Detroit that evened the score at four, the Chants went on a six-goal streak that gave Coastal a 10-4 lead with a minute remaining in the half.

Zaynib Hamze notched her first tally of the day with 18 seconds remaining in the first half. Kylie Birney added another quick goal for Detroit before the half after winning the draw control, taking the ball into the offensive zone and finding the back of the net with five seconds remaining.

Leading 10-7, Coastal began the second half by allowing three straight Detroit goals in the first 11 minutes. Elizabeth Reed broke the Titans’ scoring streak after scoring a free position shot at 18:57 of the second. Detroit’s offense went right back to work however, scoring four more times to take a 13-11 lead with 5:05 remaining.

Down by two with three and a half minutes remaining, Reed found a wide open White in front of the net who buried the shot to bring the Chants within one. Rachel Ferrara then tied the game at 1:08 on an unassisted goal, her fifteenth of the season. Maddy Ciardi won the ensuing draw control for Coastal, and eight seconds later Keri White put the biscuit in the basket to give Coastal a 14-13 lead and the win.

The Chants have a week off before traveling to Clinton, S.C. next Saturday to take on Presbyterian College in the team’s first Big South Conference match of the season. The opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
