Chanticleers Holds off Campbell 14-9
Buies Creek, N.C. - Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team bounced back to earn a 14-to-9 road victory over former Big South opponent Campbell at Barker-Lane Stadium, Wednesday. The Chants improved their record to 1-1 while the Camels dropped to 1-4 on the season.
The Chanticleers struck first getting on the board when Haley Alexander (2 goals, 1 assist, 2 ground balls, 4 draw controls, 1 caused turnover) scored with 48 seconds elapsing from the game clock.
Campbell answered back to take a brief two to one lead, on goals by Melissa Placek and Sarah Paul, before CCU went on a 10 goal run to end the first half.
Megan Busch (2 goals, 2 draw controls) scored her first of two goals on the day at the 24:22 mark to knot the score at two apiece. Courtney Genovese (5 goals) followed just under two minutes later, with the first of her five goals, finding the net on a free position shot and pushing the lead to three to two.
With just over 18 minutes left in the first half, Busch scored, making it four to two, her second goal by virtue of a free position opportunity.
Sophie Crowther (2 goals, 3 ground balls) increased the lead to 5-2 with the dish from Madeline Bromley (1 assist, 2 ground balls) with 14:54 left in the first half. Alexander scored her final goal of the day two minutes later adding to the lead with the assist from Haley Kyger (3 assists, 2 ground balls) and making it 6-2.
Crowther scored on a free position opportunity with 7:16 on the clock in the first period to push the lead to 7-2. Genovese followed 26 seconds later, on a free position shot, with her second goal making it 8-2 for the Chants.
Lyla Robinson (1 goal, 1 assist) scored her first goal of the season at the 6:18 mark on a free position shot. Julia Imbo followed with 4:42 remaining to make it 10-2 with her only goal of the day. Abbey Buchanan added the final tally, 11-2, of the first half with her first career goal with three seconds left.
Genovese started the second half getting her third of the day pushing the lead to 12-2 and 23:42 left in regulation.
The Camels scored three times when Morgan Hollenbeck found the back of the net twice and Mackenzie Koeller scored to pull within 12-5(22:06, 17:50, and 13:13).
Coastal answered with back to back goals in under a minute by Genovese to stop the offensive surge by the hosts and pushing the lead to 14-5.
Campbell closed out the scoring getting the final four tallies for the final margin of victory of 14-9.
The Chanticleers return to action on Saturday, March 3 as they travel to Fairfax, Va. to take on George Mason of the Atlantic 10 Conference. The opening draw is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
