First Game Jitters Dooms Coastal in 16-7 Loss to Louisville

Louisville, Ky. - The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team opened its 2018 season showing first game jitters and falling 16-7 to the Louisville Cardinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference, Saturday afternoon in Louisville. The Chants start off 0-1 while Louisville improves to 4-1 on the season.

The Cardinals were the first to score when Jillian Balog scored her sixth goal of the season at 23:16 on the clock. Louisville then followed with four more goals (Emily Howell, Tessa Chad, Alex McNicholas, and Julia Wood) for a five-nil lead before CCU was able to get on the board.

Haley Kyger got Coastal on the board with a free position shot with 13:38 left in the first half to cut the lead to 5-1.

UL reeled off three more goals (Shayla Scanlan, Caroline Blalock, and Wood) for an 8-to-1 lead.

The Chants started to settle down from the first game jitters to get three goals to cut the lead in half (8-to-4). Haley Alexander got back to back goals on free position shots with 2:56 and 0:45 seconds left until the half. Julia Imbo scored her first career goal with 19 seconds left to play in the first half on a cut and feed by Madeline Bromley.

Blalock started the scoring in the second half pushing the lead to 9-to-4 with just 24 seconds expiring from the clock.

Coastal then traded the next six goals with UL. Kyger got her second on the day with 27:19 left to play, followed by Sophie Crowther getting her first of the season on a free position at 22:44. Megan Busch closed the scoring for CCU getting her first career goal with 20:41 left on the clock and the closest the Chants would get.

The Cardinal closed the match with the final five goals for the final tally of 16-to-7.

Coastal Carolina will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 28 when they travel to former Big South opponent Campbell for a 4:00 p.m. scheduled opening draw.
