Women's Golf Finishes 11th at Inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Coastal Carolina's women's golf team finished 11th at the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic, Sept. 24. The tournament, hosted by CCU, was played at Grande Dunes Resort Course (Par 72 - 6,136 yards) in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Sept. 24-25.

Under sunny skies and mid 80s weather for the second straight day, the Lady Chanticleers, playing without reigning Big South Player of the Year Aruka Felgueroso due to a minor injury, posted a team total of 315 to finish at 624, just one shot ahead of Western Carolina. East Carolina took home the team title after shooting a 1-under 287 in the final round to finish at two-over 578, one shot better than runner-up Georgia State. UNC Greensboro (595), Miami (596) and Campbell (597) rounded out the top five teams. There was only other Big South school in the field, as Charleston Southern finished last in the 15-team field at 649.

There was drama in the individual race as well, as Iliska Verwey of Georgia State and East Carolina's Amber Littman and Abby Bools were tied at 2-under 142 after 36 holes, forcing a three-way playoff for the top three spots. After all three posted par on the par-5 4th hole, Verwey, who had the best opportunity at birdie on the first playoff hole, made double bogey on the par-4 and was out of the playoff, as the other two made pars. Roommates in Greenville, Littman and Bools both made pars on the next two holes, each having a good birdie opportunity to win the tournament on one of the holes, before Bools took home the individual medalist honor with a par on the difficult par-3 8th hole.

The Lady Chants were led by junior Ann Maness, who tied for 33rd with a 36-hole total of 153, while freshman Alicia Grier was next at 156, good for a tie for 45th.

Coastal returns to the course, Sat.-Sun., Oct. 13-14 at the LPGA International/Xavier Invitational, being played at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
