Women's Golf Opens Season in Tennessee

Conway - The Coastal Carolina women's golf team opens the 2017-18 season at the Mercedes-Benz Championship hosted by the University of Tennessee.

The three-day event will open with the practice round Sunday Sept. 17 and run through the event's second and final round on Tuesday Sept. 19. Monday's opening round will consist of 36 holes, while each team will play 18 holes during Tuesday's final round.

Monday's round will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, while Tuesday's round will also begin with a shotgun start, but the time will be 9 a.m.

CCU will be one of 15 teams participating in the event that will be held at the par-71, 5,897-yard Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. Joining CCU in the event are Brigham Young, Eastern Kentucky, East Tennessee State, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Southern Methodist, Texas-San Antonio and host Tennessee.

The event also has three of the top-25 ranked teams in the country participating in 17th-ranked Wake Forest; 21st-ranked Kent State; and, 26th-ranked North Carolina State.

Along with hosting several of the top teams in the nation, the early-season event will have several of the top-ranked collegiate players in the nation participating in the championship, including CCU's own Malelene Krolboll Hansen, who enters the season as the 92nd-ranked player in women's collegiate golf.

Along with Hansen, the women's golf team returns four other players from last season. Marie Lunackova returns for her junior campaign. Stephanie Hennings, Damla Bilgic and Victoria Parker all return for their second season with the Chanticleers.

CCU added three newcomers this season in; Frantiska Lunackova who begins her freshman season at CCU. She is well aware of the program as she joins her older sister Marie as a Chanticleer. Sena Ersoy transfers to CCU from Iowa Western Community College, where she was a teammate of current Chant Damla Bilgic. The final addition to the roster is from Myrtle Beach, Sydney Abruzzino.

"I am looking forward to watching this team compete, Head Coach Katie Quinney said. "Practice and qualifying leading into Tennessee has been exceptional and this team is extremely talented."
