GREENWOOD, SC Coastal Carolinas womens golf posted the top score of the day to overcome a three-shot deficit and capture the 2005 Palmetto Utility Protection Service (PUPS) Big South Conference Golf Championships, Wed., Apr. 13. The tournament was played at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor in Greenwood, S.C. The title is the third in the programs history and the first under fifth-year head coach Brian Ashley.
Coastal fired the low score of the day with a 307 to finish at 906, eight shots better than second-round leader Birmingham-Southern, who was second on the day at 318 and 914 for the 54 holes. High Point finished third at 931, shooting a 331 in the final round after trailing CCU by just one shot through 36 holes.
Coastals Line Cordes was the individual medalist, shooting a final round-low one-under 71 and finishing at even-par 216 to win the title by 11 shots. She becomes the first CCU medalist since Paige Landry in 2002. The Lady Chants Katy Heher earned All-Big South honors after finishing in a three-way tie for second at 227, shooting a 77 in the final round, the third-best score on the day. Lady Chanticleers Natalie Cruse and Lindsey Letzig also finished in the top 10, as Cruse tied for eighth at 234 and Letzig tied for 10th at 235. Freshman Rachel Graves, the leagues Freshman of the Year, tied for 15th at 237.
With the victory, the Lady Chants earn the programs first-ever berth to the NCAA Championship and will play in a NCAA Regional, Thu.-Sat., May 5-7. The location for Coastals Regional will be announced by the NCAA, Mon., Apr. 25, with Coastal going to either Gainesville, Fla., Lubbock, Texas or Las Cruces, N.M.
