CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Coastal Carolina University's Lena Schaeffner was named the Big South Golfer of the Week for her team-leading 14th-place (tied) finish at the Ole Miss Rebel Intercollegiate, the conference office announced Thursday.
The Golfer of the Week honor is Schaeffner's third of both the 2013-14 athletic season and her career. She earned the honor for the week ending Oct. 31 after her seventh-place showing at the Palmetto Intercollegiate and again for the week ending March 27 after tying for second at the Briar's Creek Invitational.
Schaeffner tied for 14th out of 96 golfers at the Ole Miss Rebel Intercollegiate (par-72, 6,313 yards) with a 3-over 219 (75-74-70). The sophomore, who entered the final day of the tournament tied for 39th, shot up the individual leaderboard after posting a final round 70. The 70 was her seventh round of par or better this season and ninth of her career. She concluded the event with six birdies, including three her final tie around the course. Moreover, she led the field in par-3 scoring, playing the holes a combined 3-under.
The Rettigheim, Germany, native holds a 74.26 scoring average through 27 rounds of competition this season. Should her scoring average hold through the remainder of the season, she will rank among Coastal Carolina all-time top-five. Moreover, her 75.69 career scoring average over the course of 61 rounds ranks third-best on the CCU all-time list.
Schaeffner and the Chanticleers return to the links April 13-15 to defend their title at the Big South Championship. The tournament, which is contested at The Patriot Course at Grand Harbor in Ninety Six, S.C., gets under way with 18 holes on Sunday, April 13, and continues with 18 holes of play on Monday before wrapping up with a final round on Tuesday.
