CHARLOTTE, N.C. Coastal Carolina freshman Aruka Felgueroso was voted the 2006-07 Big South Womens Golfer of the Year and Freshman of the Year by the Leagues head coaches and sports information directors, it was announced Monday evening at the Leagues annual banquet held at Coosaw Creek Country Club in North Charleston, S.C.
Felgueroso received 14 of the 15 first-place votes from the panel for 74 out of a possible 75 points. She lead all Big South womens golfers during the regular-season with a 74.00 stroke average and posted a League-best six top-10 finishes, including Medalist honors at the Unlimited Potential Classic and the Waterlefe/USF Invitational. Ranked No. 65 nationally by GolfWeek and currently No. 30 in the GolfStat Cup standings, Felgueroso was Coastal Carolinas top finisher in eight of nine events and earned Big South Womens Golfer of the Week three times. She shot in the 70s in all 22 rounds she played this season and carded five rounds under par this year. Felgueroso is just the second womens golfer in Big South history to win Golfer of the Year and Freshman of the Year (Winthrops Janice Roberts in 1998), receiving all 15 first-place votes for the Freshman award. She is the fourth consecutive Coastal Carolina womens golfer to be named Freshman of the Year (fifth overall), and the schools fourth Golfer of the Year recipient.
The Big South also announced five of its All-Conference honorees at the banquet. These selections are based on regular-season play and feature Felgueroso, as well as Birmingham-Southern seniors Jill Stupiansky, Shelley McGraw and sophomore Jordan Hardy and Charleston Southern freshman Olivia Jordan-Higgins. The remaining All-Conference members will consist of the top five finishers (and any additional ties) in the Championship not among those announced at the banquet.
Birmingham-Southern leads the 2007 PUPS Big South Womens Golf Championship following Mondays round, which is being contested at Coosaw Creek Country Club in North Charleston, S.C. Second round action will begin Tuesday morning at 8:00am ET, while final round competition is slated for Wednesday morning at 8:00am ET. The womens champion will receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Regionals. The event is free and open to the public.
