STARTING THE SPRING IN THE SOUTH: Coastal Carolina University's women's golf program will travel to warmer weather in Miami Lakes, Fla. for the 2010 Qdoba Classic, Feb. 14-16.
AT THE QDOBA CLASSIC: The Chanticleers last played in the Qdoba Classic in the spring of 2008, finishing 12th in the event. Three current Chants played in that event, as senior Aruka Felgueroso and juniors Alicia Grier and Carmen Jones were in the lineup. Felgueroso was the top finisher in a tie for 13th individually. This is also the fourth time in the last five years Coastal has participated in this event hosted by Miami (Fla.), as the tournament changed sponsors in 2008, with the squad's best finish was 10th in 2006.
FELGUEROSO BIG SOUTH GOLFER OF THE WEEK AGAIN: Coastal Carolina senior Aruka Felgueroso (Madrid, Spain) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Women's Golfer of the Week for events played Oct. 15-21. This was the second time this year that she won the league's weekly honor.
Felgueroso won medalist honors at the CSU Wendy's Invitational (par 71, 6,068 yards) with a 2-under 140 (74-66) for her fifth career win. Her 140 tied the school record for a 36-hole event, and she carded a school record round of 5-under 66, breaking the previous mark of 68 she shared with Ann Maness. Felgueroso led the Chanticleers to the team title as well, as Coastal Carolina finished with a school-record 36-hole total 586 - 19 shots ahead of runner-up College of Charleston. The Chants also broke a school record for lowest team round with a 1-over par 285 in the second round.
LAST TIME OUT: The Coastal Carolina University women's golf team fired a school-record 285 in the final round to take the team title at the 2009 Wendy's Invitational, Oct. 19-20.
The Chanticleers broke a school-record with a 1-over par 285 in the second round to finish at 18-over 586, also a team 36-hole record, for the tournament, 19 shots ahead of runner-up College of Charleston at 605. Memphis was third at 614, with Winthrop (627) and Carson-Newman (629) rounding out the top five. Three other Big South schools were also in the field, with Charleston Southern placing seventh at 641, Presbyterian in 10th at 668 and High Point in 13th at 678.
Senior Aruka Felgueroso broke the school record for a single round with a 5-under 66 to shoot a 36-hole total of 2-under 140 to win medalist honors. Her 66 broke the school mark she previously shared with Ann Maness by two shots while the 140 total ties the school record for a two-round event, originally set by Morgan O'Banion at the 2002 Lady Catamount Intercollegiate. Freshman Jessica Alexander posted her second top-five and third top-15 finish of the fall, placing third at 5-over 147. Junior Alicia Grier tied for fourth at 6-over 148, while junior Carmen Jones had her best collegiate finish, placing ninth at 9-over 151 after a final round 72. Freshman Brittany Henderson rounded out the team scoring at 162, tying for 31st. Playing individually, freshmen Tatum Briele (162) and Taylor Slagle (171) tied for 31st and 53rd, respectively.
CLIMBING UP THE RECORD BOOKS: Several Chanticleers are working their way in the record books. Senior Aruka Felgueroso is currently the top Coastal player in career scoring average, with a 75.0 in 84 career rounds played. Felgueroso's 75.84 scoring average last year is the fifth best in school history, while her 69 in the second round of the Big South Championship tied for the third-lowest single round ever. She already owns the school's 36- and 54-hole scoring records. Junior Alicia Grier is currently 10th in the career scoring category at 79.9 strokes per round in 58 competitive rounds.
FELGUEROSO BIG SOUTH GOLFER OF THE WEEK: Coastal Carolina senior Aruka Felgueroso has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Women's Golfer of the Week, respectively for events played Oct. 1-7.
Felgueroso posted her third top-20 finish of the season, tying for third at the EAT-A-PEACH Collegiate (par 72, 6,181 yards) and leading the Chanticleers to a fourth-place team finish. Felgueroso shot a 3-over 147 in the event, including a 1-under 71 in the first round, en route to her highest finish of the fall season. It also was her ninth career top-5 finish and 22nd top-20 finish in 31 career tournaments.
ALEXANDER NAMED BIG SOUTH GOLFER OF THE WEEK: Coastal Carolina freshman Jessica Alexander has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Women's Golfer of the Week for events played Sept. 24-30.
In just her second collegiate event, Alexander stepped up big in the final round of the Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invite, shooting a 1-under 70 to finish in a tie for third-place at 2-over 145 (75-70). Her round of 70 is the lowest in the Big South this fall.
YOUTH SERVED: Freshmen Jessica Alexander and Brittany Henderson have made the most of their opportunities in the fall portion of the schedule. Alexander has averaged 75.0 in seven rounds and posted a pair of top-20 finishes, including a tie for third at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational. Henderson has averaged 78.0 in her seven rounds played with two finishes in the top 36.
A MIX ON THE 2009-10 SQUAD: The Chanticleers have a dramatic mix on the squad this year with just one senior in three-time All-Big South golfer Aruka Felgueroso, two juniors and four freshmen, guaranteeing at least two freshmen will be in the lineup for every tournament.
HEAD COACH Katie Quinney: Head Coach Katie Quinney is wrapping up her first year as the Coastal Carolina women's golf head coach but has already experienced success with the Chanticleers. After taking over last January, Quinney led the Chants to the 2009 Big South Conference women's golf championship and just the second NCAA Regional berth in school history. She also had four players earn All-Big South honors last season, including Co-Player of the Year and Championship Medalist Aruka Felgueroso.
